The Marvel Cinematic Universe would be nothing without great writing. As spectacular as the action is, the memorable dialogues stick in the mind just as vividly.
Not only does writing help develop characters and flesh out relationships, but it also offers us new perspectives and can even impart timeless wisdom. In the MCU’s 15 years, there are plenty of memorable lines to choose from, and plenty that didn’t quite make the cut.
Here are the top ten quotes we love from the MCU.
“He might have been your father… but he wasn’t your dad.
In Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2, Yondu highlights an important difference in his relationship with Peter Quill. While not Quill’s biological father, Yondu played a much bigger role in raising him into the man he is today. Despite the differences the pair had over the years (including Yondu literally going after Quill with his murderous Ravagers), Yondu was Quill’s true father figure.
“If you’re nothing without a suit, you don’t deserve it.” – Tony Stark
This line from Tony Stark to Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Homecoming says it all about Parker’s mentality. It comes after rookie Spider-Man has messed up one time too often, prompting Stark to teach him a life lesson: it’s not what we are that makes us material possessions, it’s what’s inside us. In other words, you have to be a hero on the inside to play on the outside.
“What is grief if not love, endurance?”
This sage advice comes to life in the latest episode of WandaVision and has stuck with many viewers. Vision says the line to Wanda to help her cope with the loss of her children and the blinding grief that comes with it. However, the reason it resonates is because everyone will suffer from sadness at some point in their lives, and Vision’s words offer some much-needed comfort.
“That’s my secret, Captain. I’m always angry.”
One of the MCU’s most famous quotes takes place in the very first Avengers movie, right when Bruce Banner Hulks out and saves NYC. “Banner, now might be a really good time to get angry,” Captain America advises as the Chitauri Leviathan soars toward them. A mild-mannered Banner walks towards her nonchalantly, suggesting that he’s not really ready for the meeting. However, he surprises everyone when he reveals that he has a constant simmering rage that is ready to explode at a moment’s notice.
“You’re going to get hurt, you’re going to hurt them back. You’re going to kill yourself… go away.”
Captain America is nothing if not inspiring, but Avengers: Age of Ultron features his most exciting performance yet. The chill conversations come during the climactic battle against Ultron’s patrols in Sokovia. As thousands of patrols converge and hope dwindles, he tells his team that even death is no excuse for failure. And you know Captain America is a man who lives by his own words, which means he’s the perfect leader to follow into battle.
“Are you Thor, god of hammers?”
Until this line in Thor Ragnarok, Thor misunderstood his power. He accidentally put all his trust in his magical hammer Mjölnir. So when his evil sister Hela breaks him, he has a crisis of confidence. Thor’s father, Odin, sets him straight, reminding him that he is a God with or without his weapons. And not just any God, but the God of Thunder. Cue Thor unleashing lightning on Asgard’s Bifröst set to Led Zepplin’s Immigrant Song.
“She is not alone.
During the Battle of Wakanda in Avengers Infinity War, Proxima Midnight taunts Okoye as she prepares to deliver the killing blow, telling her that she will die alone. Black Widow jumps to Okoye’s defense and tells her that she is not alone. With Wanda joining the fray, it shows that the formerly male-dominated Avengers are truly an equal opportunity team, and that these ladies have each other’s backs.
“We are Groot!”
Groot can only say three words: “I am Groot.” That’s kind of his thing. However, it subverts expectations at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy with this line. What makes it even harder is that Groot says this while sacrificing his life to save his friends by creating a protective shell around them. On a sadder note, Groot actually dies here; later incarnations are Groot’s offspring with different personalities, no better than the much-loved original.
“Dormammu, I have come to bargain.
How to bring a new direction to the typical hero vs. villain fight? Doctor Strange led the way when he faced off against the ridiculously powerful ruler of the Dark Dimension in his debut film. Instead, if he fights him, Strange makes him submit out of sheer frustration and traps him in a time loop. Every time Dormammu is killed by Strange, the Master of the Mystic Arts reappears saying “Dormammu, I’ve come to a deal.”
“I’m Iron Man.
The line that follows encapsulates Iron Man, spoken at the end of the film that launched the MCU. Typically, superheroes hide their identities to stop villains attacking their loved ones. It speaks to Tony Stark’s strength, as well as his ego, that he proudly announces to the press room that he is the man behind the mask. After all, nobody tells Iron Man what to do.
