Kevin Costner delivered a much-needed message during the first Yellowstone table read.

Denim Richards, who played rancher Colby Mayfield in the western drama, spoke on Friday, December 13. The New York Post about the first table read the cast did when they filmed Season 1.

Richards, 36, said Costner, 69, offered some words of wisdom to his fellow actors. According to Richards, Dances with Wolves star admitted he was scared about his new gig and encouraged everyone to look out for each other and be a team.

“Everybody gets together and [Costner] he goes inside. He’s so massive, but so humble,” Richards recounted. “They’re all about to get up from the table and walk out. [Costner] he said, “I don’t know about you, but I’m scared as hell.” So why don’t we get together as best we can and make it so we don’t support each other.'”

Richards said the tension eased after the two-time Oscar winner admitted he was even nervous.

“You could feel the stress go out of the room. It was a beautiful thing,” Richards recalled. “This is an Oscar legend … whether he was really scared or not, who knows. But it gave everyone an extra level of confidence that there was no hierarchy.”

Costner did a great job portraying John Dutton — ranch owner and patriarch of the Dutton family — in the hit series. The award-winning filmmaker’s character was shockingly killed off in the 5B series premiere in November 2024.

Costner confirmed he was leaving the show in June via an Instagram video.

“After that long year and a half of work on Horizondoing all the things that need to be done and thinking about them Yellowstonethe beloved series that I love, that I know you love, I just realized that I will not be able to continue in season 5B or in the future,” the three-time Golden Globe winner told his followers. was something that really changed me.
