2025 Ram 1500

Ram Delays EV Truck, Pushes Hybrid Truck Timeline

Ram, Stellantis’ truck brand, is changing its expected product cadence. The company announced in a press release today that the Ram 1500 Ramcharger Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV) will arrive ahead of the Ram 1500 REV, the company’s battery electric light-duty pickup truck.

The brand originally planned to launch the Ram 1500 REV in the first half of 2025. Now customers will be able to order their Ramcharger in the first half of 2025, followed by the launch of the Ram 1500 REV battery electric vehicle (BEV) in 2026. .

Ram accurately cites “overwhelming consumer interest” as the reason for the change, along with “slowing industry demand for half-ton BEV pickups.”

Rival Ram Ford sold 22,807 F-150 Lightning BEV pickups during the third quarter of 2024, an 86 percent year-over-year increase. Rivian’s R1T sales in July, August and September of this year significantly exceeded the results of 2023 and 2022, according to data provided by GoodCarBadCar. Tesla sold over 28,000 Cybertrucks in the first three quarters of the year.

EREV vehicles have been successful in China for more than ten years. Scout announced this year that its new Terra truck and Traveler SUV will be available in battery-electric or EREV form when they go on sale later this decade.

The move was announced a week after the company welcomed Tim Kiniskis, former head of the Jeep and Ram brands, back to the role of Ram CEO. He previously retired while now-ousted Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares was at the helm of the automaker.

“Stellantis has had some issues finalizing its electric vehicles for launch, and pushing an innovative product while delaying a critical launch like the Ram 1500 REV is a much better – and in the long run less expensive – approach than rushing the product to market. which is not I’m not ready,” he said.

The Ram 1500 Ramcharger is expected to have a range of 690 miles, achieved with a battery that combines a 92-kilowatt-hour battery with a 130-kilowatt generator that uses gasoline.

Ramcharger will be able to charge other vehicles, appliances and homes using vehicle-to-vehicle and bi-directional charging. It can also provide power back to the grid.

Its powertrain will deliver 663 horsepower and more than 615 pound-feet of torque. Ram targets 0-60 miles per hour (mph) in 4.4 seconds for the truck. The Ramcharger will be able to tow up to 14,000 pounds and has a payload capacity of 2,625 pounds.

The Ramcharger Ram 1500 will be built at the company’s Sterling Heights, Michigan assembly plant.
