A curveball was thrown for the fans Penguin as the show may get a second season, despite the eight-episode limited series originally slated as a one-off.
The HBO series, which debuted in September, starred Colin Farrell in the title role and was joined by Cristin Milioti, Rhenzy Feliz, Deirdre O’Connell, Carmen Ejogo and Theo Rossi.
Set after the 2022 Matt Reeves film, Batman, Penguin follows what came after Oz Cobb plans to lead Gotham’s underworld.
It received three Golden Globe nominations, including nominations for Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti in their respective roles, as well as a nomination for Best Television Limited Series, Anthology Series or Motion Picture Made for Television.
The series, which was expected to be a one-off, may not be done just yet, however, as Matt Reeves casually let slip in a new interview with Variety: “We’re talking to [showrunner] Lauren [LeFranc] about making another season.”
Describing the show as a “special experience”, Reeves said: “I feel really lucky. These characters don’t belong to me, they belong to the world. It’s about whether you can approach them in a way that says something. personal.”
There is no confirmation that a second season will happen, but a comment from Reeves suggests that there is a possibility that it is on the table.
Penguin was a hit, earning a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and a 92% viewership rating, and the first season is currently available to stream on Max.
