The 2000 Christmas classic almost featured a completely different actor.
While the title character of the 2000 film How the Grinch Stole Christmas may be one of Jim Carrey’s most iconic roles, the role almost went to John Stamos. The Full house The actor, 61, revealed the news Saturday Night Live cast member james austin johnson on Tis The Grinch Christmas Podcast dropped on Monday, December 23rd.
“Here’s an interesting fact you don’t know about me,” Stamos said. “I originally wanted to play you in a movie that Jim Carrey got.
However, the role did not work out for Stamos as he faced significant setbacks in the early stages of production. “I went to the makeup test and I was allergic to all the prosthetics,” Stamos said.
The ER the actor did not reveal any further details about the missed opportunity. But Johnson stayed in character, talking about how he did some “consulting” work on the film. As a result of his consulting work, Johnson’s Grinch felt “triggered”.
“When they build an exact replica of your neighborhood and you’re walking around but you know you’re on a soundstage in freaking Burbank, it’s kind of scary,” Johnson said.
While the makeup didn’t work for Stamos, it seemed to work for Carrey. However, he admitted that he would be willing to make a sequel How the Grinch Stole Christmas if the crew were able to do makeup more efficiently.
“The thing is, I’m doing it that day with a ton of makeup on and I can hardly breathe. It was an extremely excruciating process,” Carrey said in a December interview with Comic book. “I was thinking about the kids the whole time. ‘It’s for the kids. It’s for the kids. It’s for the kids.’ And now, with motion capture and things like that, I was free to do other things in that world.”
