what’s new
Parts of northern Florida and southern Georgia could see temperatures drop into the 30s this weekend, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
Why it matters
Temperatures as low as 30 degrees could occur, and people, plants and property exposed to those temperatures could be vulnerable, the NWS warns.
“Appropriate precautions should be taken to ensure that fragile vegetation and outdoor pets have adequate protection from freezing temperatures. Young children, the elderly and the homeless are especially vulnerable to the cold. Take precautions to protect them,” the NWS warning said.
What to know
The NWS has released a map of areas affected by the frost watch. The watch comes as temperatures are in the mid-60s on Friday afternoon and are forecast to be in the mid-50s on Saturday.
A frost watch will be in effect late Saturday night through Sunday morning, the NWS says.
Several states north of Georgia are also under a winter weather advisory for West Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee and Kentucky. Snow accumulations of one to three inches of snow could be seen in the area, the NWS says. Wind gusts of 35 mph and six inches of snow are possible in West Virginia.
“Plan on slippery roads. Hazardous conditions could affect the Friday evening commute, NWS says.”
What people are saying
“A freeze can last two to four hours, and along the I-10 corridor, Lake City and Live Oak are some of the larger cities on a freeze watch,” Hess said. It’s normal for the Jacksonville area to see about “12-15 freezing days a year,” Hess noted, adding that’s different from the southern part of the state.
What happens next
NWS Tallahassee posted on X, formerly Twitter, warning residents that the cooler air won’t stick around for long, saying, “If you’re not a fan of the cold weather coming this weekend, warmer, wetter weather is on the way for Christmas. @NWSCPC 6-10 day outlook for 25-29 December calls for above-normal temperatures and precipitation for much of the nation in the Pacific Northwest.”
