Christmas lights threatened by antlered deer, Colorado warned

This festive season, there may be a risk that the festive decorations will be torn apart by a surprising culprit.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) has warned residents of the state that they are receiving a large number of calls from people entangling deer antlers in Christmas decorations and other yard decorations.

While deer are usually rather clumsy creatures, they become much more erratic and prone to aggression this time of year as they frantically search for a mate.

“Every year our rangers respond to calls of deer entangled in various nets and holiday decorations,” CPW Area Wildlife Manager Adrian Archuleta said in a statement.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife warns residents that male deer can become entangled in swings, sports nets, hoses, Christmas lights and even bicycles during rutting season.

There are two main species of deer native to Colorado: mule deer and white-tailed deer. Estrus of both species usually peaks in mid to late November and may last until late December in some areas.

During estrus, bucks are highly active and exhibit behaviors aimed at attracting does and establishing dominance over other males. This can involve extensive travel, often in daylight, as well as engaging in sparring or even full-fledged fights for dominance and breeding rights.

This activity is how the male deer eventually gets tangled up in things like Christmas lights.

“In some cases, these hazards prevent the deer from being able to eat and breathe. In addition, it causes high stress to the animal and can lead to death,” Archuleta said.

The public is advised to ensure that holiday decorations and lights are securely attached to sturdy structures and are suspended at least eight feet above the ground. Hanging lights from trees or bushes is not recommended, as deer often rub their antlers on plants or tree trunks to sharpen them during rut.

If you come across a deer that has become entangled or trapped, you should not attempt to free it yourself, as deer often become more aggressive at this time of year.

“When deer become entangled, it’s important for the public to quickly call the nearest CPW office with location information,” Archuleta said.

“People should never attempt to remove a deer from these hazards themselves due to the serious risk of injury that can be caused by the antlers and hooves.”

In addition, deer can transmit diseases such as chronic wasting disease, tuberculosis and acidosis. This is why it is illegal to feed wildlife in Colorado.

“Attracting deer can concentrate them in small spaces, which facilitates the spread of disease, attracts predators, and causes them to lose their natural fear of humans,” CPW warns on its website.

During the rut, roe deer can be seen more often on the roads, so drivers are also advised to be careful.

“Drivers are also being warned to slow down and watch out for deer on highways. Not only do bucks chase a mate, but the animals are also moving into winter range and will be crossing roads more often on both highways and major roads.” CPW said in a statement.
